The fastest, easiest, fun way to learn basic kanji. And an unexpected but terrific side effect is that it sharpens memory and attention well beyond playing the game! I highly recommend this game, and hope it's creators will eventually do ALL the levels of Joyou Kanji!
Decent in Concept, Lacking in Execution
As always, single high rated reviews on the app store are dubious, and after reading the negative review on the JLPT3 version of this app, I hesitated before buying both at once. This was probably a good idea in the end, as this app is okay, but not great at what it advertises to be trying to do.
The "Study Cardset" section of the app is very well done, and I quickly picked up several kanji with little trouble. The problem comes in when you leave the study section, and try to use the match game portion of the app. In the study section, you're given a selection of ~20 or so kanji, and then have access to definitions and examples of those kanji. I assumed that if I started the game with that same section chosen, those kanji would be the ones used in the matching game to reinforce what I had just learned. They were not. It seemingly either pulls in random kanji from multiple sections, or each section contains more than the study list initially implies, and it's pulling from the entire list rather than what it just gave you. This makes using the card game for reinforcement of new kanji very difficult, and the app ultimately no more valuable than a list of kanji definitions with examples.
Furthermore, I'm not sure that blind matching of kanji is a particularly valuable learning tool. They show you the face of the cards for no more than 2 seconds before flipping them over, which for the average person still learning means you're choosing blind while racing against a clock for a score that doesn't really matter in the end. Overall, a disappointing purchase, though I'll likely keep the app on my phone to use the study section. The examples given seemed to use many of the previous kanji in the list, which I found excellent, even if the game portion was severely lacking.
